About Screencast
Screencast is a free browser-based screen recorder built for people who want to capture, review, and share their screen without installing software or signing up for another account. You open it in a browser tab, record what you need, review the video locally, and export a file. That is the entire workflow.
Why we built it
Most screen recording tools either require a desktop install or immediately upload your recording to a cloud service. For many practical tasks — a bug report, a product walkthrough, a quick how-to for a colleague — neither is necessary. Screencast was built around the idea that capturing and sharing a screen recording should not require more setup than the task itself.
Local-first approach
Recording, review, and export happen on your device. Screencast does not upload your video, audio, or screen content to its servers. Your browser controls access to the camera, microphone, and display — you choose what to share when the browser picker appears, and the resulting file stays in your browser storage until you export it to your device.
The only data Screencast collects is standard website analytics (page views, browser type, general interactions) to understand how the tool is used and where it can improve. That data is not linked to your recording content.
What Screencast is for
Screencast works well for software bug reports, product demos, customer support recordings, training clips, remote feedback, and personal notes where you want to show something rather than describe it. It is designed for desktop and laptop browsers — Chrome, Edge, and Firefox on Mac or Windows — where the browser recording APIs are most capable.
How Screencast is built
Screencast is a static website. The pages are plain HTML, CSS, and JavaScript delivered to your browser, and the recorder is built entirely on the capture APIs the browser already provides. There is no application server that receives video, which is why the local-first promise is a property of the architecture rather than a policy we ask you to trust.
Recordings are captured as WebM and written to browser storage in pieces while they run. MP4 conversion happens on your device when requested, using WebCodecs when the browser exposes a compatible encoder and an in-page FFmpeg fallback otherwise. Backgrounds are drawn locally with canvas primitives. The recorder does not upload video content as part of capture, review, or export.
How Screencast is funded
Screencast is free and has no paid feature tier. The website may display third-party advertising to support hosting and maintenance, but advertising is separate from recording data and is not derived from what you capture. Our privacy policy explains website analytics, advertising, browser storage, and consent handling.
How we write the guides
Guide claims are checked against the current recorder implementation and primary browser documentation. Browser-dependent behavior is described as conditional unless a dated, reproducible test is available. Each guide shows its last review date and source scope. Read the testing and editorial methodology or email a correction to support@onlinescreencast.com.
